Emissive surfaces (neon, screens, lava, glow)
Painting surfaces that appear to emit light themselves, like neon signs, screens, lava, and magic glows, with convincing brightness and color.
What it is
Emissive surfaces look like they are the light source, not just lit by one. Phone and monitor screens, neon tubes, magic spells, lava, LED strips, and UI holograms all work this way. You’re painting the object and the sense that it pumps light into the scene.
These areas become some of the brightest values in your image, but with control: you choose where they sit in your value range so they feel intense without blowing out every detail. You often simplify their local form — the bumps and planes on the object — and describe them instead with strong shapes, clear edges, and controlled bloom, the soft halo of light around the source.
You also show what their light does to nearby things: a neon sign throws pink light on walls, faces, and smoky air, not just its own tube; a lava flow lights the undersides of rocks and characters from below. Emissive materials always have two parts — the object itself, and the colored light it casts on the rest of the scene.
Why it matters
Without control, glowing elements either look pasted-on or flatten the scene. Crank saturation and value alone and screens become white rectangles with no depth, neon becomes random bright outlines that don't interact with anything, and lava looks like orange paint sitting in dark shapes. Keep them too dim or skip their bounce light, and they stop reading as light sources and just look like oddly colored objects. Getting emissives right anchors your light hierarchy, sells night scenes, and makes effects feel integrated instead of pasted on.

- ✓You can keep emissive areas among the brightest values in the image without losing structure or turning them into pure white holes.
- ✓You can put a glowing object in a dim scene and have its light visibly affect nearby planes — color spill, rim light, or under-lighting.
- ✓You can paint the same object with and without its screen/neon/lava turned on, and the “on” version changes the lighting of the environment, not just the object’s color.
- ✓Your glows and blooms are controlled shapes that respect perspective and form, instead of fuzzy airbrush halos that ignore edges, overlaps, and light direction.
