Colored light

Colored light tints every surface, shadow, and reflection it touches — without erasing local color or form.

What it is

Colored light means the source itself has a hue — a warm lamp, a green traffic light, blue sky. Instead of just lightening or darkening a surface, it pushes that surface toward its own color, more on some materials than others.

This shows up as subtle hue shifts across a form. Skin under a warm lamp picks up orange and red on the lit side, while the shadow side leans cooler by contrast. A blue monitor casts a bluish tint on nearby objects, which still keep their own color and value relationships.

You balance three things: the object's base color, the color of the main light, and the color of any bounce light (light reflected off nearby surfaces). Metals pick up the light color strongly; matte cloth barely shifts. You control where the colored light is strongest, where it fades, and how it mixes with ambient light so the scene stays coherent.

Why it matters

Without control over colored light, scenes turn muddy and gray, or over-tinted like a cheap filter. Forms stop reading when every plane is pushed to the same hue, and shadows go flat black instead of picking up color from the environment. Skin can look sunburned or sickly by accident, and materials lose believability. Once you control it, you can set time of day, mood, and atmosphere on purpose, while keeping form, local color, and material separation clear.
