What it is
This is painting burning, breaking, and drifting things so they look like they obey physics: flame tongues that lick and taper, smoke that billows and thins, dust that hangs and settles. It shows up as campfires, torches, burning buildings, muzzle flashes, impact smoke, drifting dust in sunlight, explosion plumes, and shockwaves.
You think of each effect as a volume made of layers, not a stamp. Fire has a bright core, color shift, and soft outer glow. Smoke has thicker, darker rolls near its source and breaks up into softer, lighter wisps as it spreads. Explosions combine a quick, hot flash with a slower balloon of dirty smoke, flying fragments, and lingering dust. You use shape design, edges, and opacity to show those stages instead of one fuzzy blob.
You control color temperature and value inside these effects. Flames shift from white-yellow at the hottest spots through oranges and reds into dark, sooty edges. Smoke gets lighter and bluer as it mixes with air. Dust is usually mid-value and low contrast, catching light along its upper planes and fading into the background. You avoid pure black or neon unless the reference demands it, so the effect sits in the same lighting and color world as the rest of the scene.
Why it matters
Without this skill, fire looks like yellow cotton candy, smoke like grey airbrush scribbles, and explosions like copy-pasted stock brushes. Effects either overpower the scene with flat, glowing noise or feel weightless and fake. You lose the sense of danger, scale, and atmosphere that combustion should add. Once you can paint the structure and timing of these effects, they sell action, depth, and mood instead of fighting your lighting and composition.
