Energy (lightning, electricity, magic/energy effect design)
Designing and painting convincing lightning, electricity, and abstract energy effects that sit believably in your scenes.
What it is
This skill is inventing and painting energy with no fixed real-world shape: lightning bolts, magic beams, force fields, glowing glyphs, sci-fi weapons fire. You decide where it comes from, how it travels or gathers, and how bright and solid it is against the rest of the scene.
You think in terms of structure, not just glow brushes. A lightning bolt has a main path, branching, and taper. A spell circle has clear symbols, spacing, and thickness changes. A plasma blast has a core, a falloff, and sparks or heat distortion. You define these with clear edges and shapes before softening and blooming the light.
You also control color and contrast so the effect feels powerful without flattening the picture. This means choosing a limited color range, handling the brightest parts near pure white, and planning how much surrounding area it lights up. In production you often paint separate layers: hard shapes, inner glow, outer glow, sparks, and impact hits.
Why it matters
Without this skill, energy effects look like neon scribbles pasted on top of the painting. Lightning lacks direction and scale, magic symbols feel like stickers, and arcs don't interact with nearby forms. The eye gets pulled to overexposed blobs with no structure, or the effect disappears because it's too timid. Solid energy design makes the effect support the story (where the power comes from, where it's going, how dangerous it feels) while fitting the lighting and perspective of the image.
You can check it when
- ✓You can break an energy effect into clear components (core shape, branches or particles, inner and outer glow) and paint each deliberately instead of relying on one fuzzy brush.
- ✓You can design several “looks” of energy (e.g. crackling electricity, smooth plasma beam, runic magic circle) that each feel distinct and consistent across images.
- ✓Your brightest areas of energy feel structured rather than blown out: you keep a readable shape even at high brightness, instead of a featureless white blob.
- ✓Your energy effects interact with the scene: they cast light on nearby forms, wrap with perspective, and respect occlusion (things in front block or break the effect).
