Bounce/reflected light and ambient occlusion

Separating the soft, indirect light that fills shadows from the tight, dark pockets where light struggles to reach at all.

What it is

Bounce (reflected) light hits one surface, picks up its color and strength, then lights another surface from a new direction. It shows up mainly on the shadow side, as a soft secondary light that lifts the darkness and often carries a tint from nearby objects or the environment.

Ambient occlusion is the opposite end of that scale: the darkest, least-lit areas where light struggles to reach — corners, creases, contact points, folds that close in on themselves. These aren't cast shadows with a clear edge; they're soft-edged pockets of reduced light where surfaces pack together.

Use bounce light to keep shadows from going dead and flat: the underside of a chin picks up warmth from skin and clothes, a sphere near a red wall gets a red glow on its shadow edge, the ground lights the bottoms of shoes. Keep ambient occlusion areas darker and simpler — under a shoe sole, in deep eye sockets, where fingers press together. The balance is how much shadow lifts from indirect light, and where it stays crushed because light can't get in at all.

Why it matters

Without bounce light, your shadows stay flat and muddy, or you over-brighten them until everything looks lit from all sides. Without ambient occlusion, forms feel like stickers floating in space — nothing touches, creases go shallow, and ground contact reads as vague. Control both and you get solid contact, believable depth in folds, and shadows that feel rich instead of like darker copies of the light side.
