Surface qualities
Showing what a surface is made of by how it reacts to light: dull, glossy, wet, glowing, see‑through, or anything in between.
What it is
Surface qualities show what an object is made of — painted wood, chrome, rubber, skin, glass, neon — using only light and value (light-dark), not labels. You choose how sharp or soft highlights are, how light bounces, how deep it sinks into the material, and how much the material glows on its own.
On matte and rough surfaces, light scatters: highlights are broad and soft, sometimes barely visible. On glossy and polished surfaces, light stays tight: highlights are small, sharp, and mirror the light source and environment more literally. Changing only highlight size, sharpness, and placement can turn the same base form from clay to plastic to chrome.
Wet surfaces combine behaviors: you still see the underlying material, but an extra glossy layer sits on top, adding brighter, sharper highlights and more reflections — especially at edges and where water pools thick. Stack those correctly and dry stone becomes slick, wet rock.
As a surface turns away from you, reflectivity increases — the Fresnel effect. At glancing angles, even matte materials show more sheen, and glossy materials turn mirror-like near silhouettes and edges. Strengthen edge highlights, rim light, and edge reflections there, even when the front-facing area looks duller.
Transparent and translucent materials let light pass through. Transparency (clear glass) means seeing through to other things, with distortions and reflections on the surface. Translucency and subsurface scattering (skin, wax, leaves) mean light enters the material, scatters inside, and exits softer and glowing — especially in thin areas and against strong backlight.
Emissive surfaces add light to the scene instead of only reflecting it. Screens, neon, lava, and magic glows have bright cores, softer bloom around them, and cast light onto nearby forms. Control value and saturation so the source feels powerful without flattening everything around it.
Why it matters
Without clear surface qualities, everything you paint reads as the same generic plastic or clay: metals don't feel hard, skin looks like painted plaster, wet things don't feel wet, and glows look like flat stickers instead of light sources. Viewers judge materials mainly by how you handle highlights, reflections, edges, and glow — get those vague and your designs lose believability and mood.
You can check it when
- ✓You can repaint the same simple object (a sphere or cube) as dull, glossy, wet, transparent, translucent, and emissive, and each version reads instantly without labels.
- ✓Your highlights change convincingly with material: broad and soft on rough surfaces, small and sharp on polished ones, with more sheen at glancing angles.
- ✓Your wet or slick areas feel added on top of the base material, not like the whole object got uniformly shinier or lighter.
- ✓Your glowing objects visibly affect nearby forms with believable light and color, and still read brighter than the reflections and bounce light they create.
