Layer system (layers, groups, clipping masks, layer masks, blend modes)

You use layers, groups, masks, and blend modes to build clean, flexible paintings you can edit without destroying earlier work.

What it is

You keep a tidy, intentional layer stack, not a chaotic pile named "Layer 23 copy". You group related layers (character, background, FX, UI) and name them so you can find things fast. Elements that need separate control — line art, flats, shadows, highlights, textures, UI text — get their own layers instead of being painted into one.

You use layer masks and clipping masks instead of erasing. A layer mask is a black-and-white map that hides or reveals part of a layer without deleting pixels — paint on it to adjust edges, cut holes, or fade things out. A clipping mask locks a layer to the shape of the one below it, so you can add shading, color, or texture without painting outside your lines.

You pick blend modes on purpose: Multiply for shadows, Add/Linear Dodge or Screen for light effects, Overlay/Soft Light for tinting — tools, not guesses. Stack these with masks and groups for control: a "Lighting" group in Multiply above your flats, a "Highlights" group in Add above that, each with its own mask, so you can tweak lighting later without repainting the base.

You also know when not to overbuild the stack: merge layers once a part is stable, and paint directly when that's faster than adding more layers. The structure should serve the painting, not the other way around.

Why it matters

Without a solid layer system, revisions are slow and painful — changing a color or moving one element can mean repainting whole areas because everything is welded together. Messy, unnamed layers make mistakes easy and hard to trace. Overusing blend modes can flatten form or muddy color you can't fix. A clear layer structure lets you iterate, respond to feedback, and hand off files without losing control of the image.
