Atmospheric value compression

How distance bunches values together, so far objects lose contrast while near ones keep a full range.

What it is

Atmospheric value compression is noticing how contrast changes with distance. Nearby objects keep a clear spread of lights and darks. As things recede into space, that spread narrows: shadows fill in, highlights dull down, and everything bunches toward a middle gray.

In practice, this means you stop copying local contrast blindly from reference. You ask: how far is this form from the viewer, and how much contrast would still survive at that distance? You deliberately give foreground objects stronger darks and clearer lights, while distant trees, buildings, or mountains sit in a tighter value band.

When drawing, you might block in a landscape so the front rocks run from near-black to near-white, the midground only runs from dark to light midtones, and the far hills are all minor steps around a single middle value. Figures in space, interior scenes with depth, and streetscapes all use the same idea: more distance, less value spread.

Why it matters

Without atmospheric value compression, depth collapses. Distant elements fight the foreground with the same strong blacks and bright whites, making the image feel flat and cluttered. Space becomes confusing: you rely only on size and overlap, but your values keep insisting everything is equally close. Once you control how much contrast each depth layer is allowed, the scene gains a sense of air and distance, and your focal areas stand out without noise from the background.
