Painting convincing skies, clouds, fog and mist, with shapes, depth and color that match the mood and lighting of the scene.
What it is
This covers the big, soft atmospheric shapes: skies, cloud banks, horizon haze, ground fog, and mist wrapping mountains or buildings. You choose shapes, edges, and color shifts that make air feel thick or thin, dry or humid, clear or hazy.
Skies and clouds need structure, not just softness. You suggest volume and scale: clouds stacking in perspective, thin veils versus chunky masses, tops catching light while bases turn cooler and darker, distant clouds losing contrast and detail. Your brushwork should follow the wind direction and cloud growth, not fight it.
Fog and mist are about sculpting visibility. You decide how fast objects fade with distance, how much contrast and saturation to strip away, and how much background shows through. Paint it with transparent passes, soft masks, and controlled edge loss, so it reads as light passing through particles, not a gray layer on top.
Why it matters
Without atmospheric control, outdoor scenes look flat and cut out: clouds read as stickers on a blue wall, distant mountains stay too crisp, and characters never seem to share air with the background. Depth cues vanish because nothing fades correctly with distance, and mood fights subject — a foggy morning looks like a normal day with blur added. Once you can shape skies, clouds, fog, and mist on purpose, you sell scale, time of day, and weather in a few strokes, and tie the whole painting into one environment.
You can check it when
- ✓You can paint a clear day, an overcast sky, and a hazy or misty scene so each reads correctly from the sky and air alone, even as a small thumbnail.
- ✓Your clouds show volume and perspective: tops and bottoms differ in value and color, and distant clouds look softer and less defined than nearby ones.
