The edge spectrum (hard, soft, lost, found)

Using hard, soft, lost, and found edges on purpose, so every transition has a deliberate sharpness or blur.

What it is

Edges are the borders where one shape or value turns into another. They aren't all the same sharpness: some are crisp (hard edges), some are gradual and blurry (soft edges), some disappear into their surroundings (lost edges), and some reappear after being hidden (found edges).

You control this spectrum by how quickly one area turns into the next. A hard edge is a quick jump: light skin against black fabric, a metal rim against the sky. A soft edge is a slow, gentle shift: a cheek turning into shadow, a cloud against similar-valued sky. A lost edge is where two touching shapes share almost the same value or color, so their border nearly vanishes. A found edge is where that border reappears after being hidden or softened.

In practice you ask, for every boundary, how sharp it really is. You push or pull the edge with brush size, opacity, and blending — sharpening it so a form reads more clearly, softening it so it sits back, or losing it where two planes merge in shadow and picking it up again where light or contrast separates them.

Why it matters

If all edges are treated the same, your forms flatten and the lighting looks fake. Too many hard edges make an image look cut-out and noisy; too many soft edges turn it to mush and your shapes lose structure. Without the full spectrum, you end up fixing drawings with detail instead of clear form, and your lighting stops describing where planes turn, where things overlap, and where shapes separate in space.
