Rendering metals so they read as solid, reflective materials with believable light behavior and distinct finishes.
What it is
Metal is about reflectivity and value range. Most metals jump from very dark to very light in sharp transitions, because they reflect light like a warped mirror. You paint this with crisp value shapes and highlights, not soft shading like plastic or skin.
Raw or brushed metal (unfinished steel, aluminum) shows long, slightly noisy reflections. Edges between light and dark stay sharp, but the surface has a faint grain: stretched streaks, small value shifts, and softer, elongated highlights instead of tiny pinpoints.
Painted metal is mostly about the paint layer: the main body behaves like glossy or semi-gloss paint, with larger, softer highlights, simpler reflections, and a smaller value jump. Only exposed scratches and worn corners show the sharper, brighter metal underneath.
Chrome is almost pure reflection: local color nearly disappears, and what you see is the environment wrapped around the form. You paint the sky, ground, and nearby objects bent across the surface, with hard-edged transitions and small, bright highlights where light reflects toward the viewer.
Gold, brass, and copper keep strong reflectivity but with a warm color bias. Their darks shift to rich browns/reds, and lights push to warm yellow or orange-white. Paint them as mirrors of the environment, but tint everything with the metal's hue, and keep the strongest highlights almost white with a slight warm cast.
Why it matters
Without metal-specific handling, everything turns into the same shiny plastic. Reflections become random stripes, highlights sit in the wrong place, and metals lose weight and believability: chrome looks like gray rubber, gold looks like yellow paint, and edges don't feel sharp or solid. Control value jumps, edge sharpness, and how the environment wraps around the form, and metals read distinctly — selling scale, quality, and realism in your scenes and designs.
