Key/fill/rim concepts
Key, fill, and rim lights in 3D, so your paint-overs inherit clear form, separation, and focus from the render.
What it is
In 3D, a key light is your main light source. It defines the direction of light and does most of the work showing the form. In a character scene, this is usually the strongest light hitting the face or body; in an environment, it might be the sun or main window. You place it first, decide its angle and height, and let everything else answer to it.
A fill light is there to rescue information from going completely black, not to fight the key. It is weaker and softer. In practice, this can be a large, dim area light, a bounced-light setup, or exposure tweaks and environment light used intentionally. You use it to open up shadows so planes are still readable and paintable, without flattening the scene.
A rim (or back) light sits behind or to the side of the subject, catching an edge and creating a bright outline against a darker background. In 3D, that often means a light slightly behind the model, offset so it grazes shoulders, hair, or silhouettes. Its job is separation: it peels the subject off the background and gives you a clear, graphic contour to paint into.
In real work, you're not following a rigid three-point recipe — you're using these roles as tools. You might use a big sky HDRI as fill, a focused spot as key, and a narrow area light as rim. You shift strengths and colors to fit the mood, but you still know which light is doing what, and you can adjust them separately to get a render that's a strong base for overpainting.
Why it matters
Without clear key/fill/rim decisions, 3D lighting becomes a soup of equally strong lights. Forms get confusing, shadows either crush to black or disappear, and silhouettes blend into the background. You lose control over where the viewer looks, and your paint-over turns into a rescue operation instead of a refinement. With clear roles for each light, your render has hierarchy, separation, and usable information, so you can spend your painting time on design and style instead of fixing basic readability.
You can check it when
- ✓You can point to each major light in your 3D scene and say confidently: this is the key, this is the fill, this is the rim (or, I chose not to use one here).
- ✓You can turn off your fill light and the image still makes sense, just with darker shadows; turn off the key and the scene obviously loses its main definition; turn off the rim and the subject clearly merges more with the background.
- ✓Your rim lights create clean, intentional edges exactly where they graze the form, not random glowing outlines all around the subject.
- ✓When you do a quick paint-over, you're building on clear light direction, open but controlled shadows, and strong separation, not repainting the lighting from scratch.
