Focal point and visual hierarchy

Set a viewing order by emphasizing a primary focal point, supporting areas, and quieter background information.

What it is

A focal point is the area you most want noticed and remembered, such as a face, a clash of swords, a glowing portal, or a crucial object. Visual hierarchy sets the order in which the other areas are seen around it.

Choose primary, secondary, and tertiary points early. Use value and color contrast, edge sharpness, detail density, texture, saturation, and shape grouping to support that order. Give the strongest combination to the main subject, reduce emphasis in supporting areas, and simplify unimportant areas.

Check your eye movement as you render and adjust the image. Reduce contrast or detail when background elements compete with the character. Sharpen edges, increase local contrast, or simplify nearby shapes when the focal point is hard to find.

Why it matters

A focal point and hierarchy help the image communicate its main story beat before secondary moments and background information. Weak control can make areas compete equally, causing the main idea to lose emphasis.
