Edge hierarchy

Rank edges by sharpness, softness, or loss so forms read in the intended order.

What it is

Edge hierarchy organizes edges by how strongly they support the image read. Some edges stay sharp, others soften, and some nearly disappear.

Choose which contours and form breaks must remain clear for the pose, gesture, or design to read. A weapon silhouette may be crisper than nearby cloth folds, and the eyelid touching the iris may be sharper than the far cheek.

Apply the hierarchy through brushwork. Sharpen key edges, blend others, and allow selected edges to lose definition.

Why it matters

Edge hierarchy guides attention and helps show structure and depth. Equal sharpness can make an image feel flat and busy, while excessive softness can make forms difficult to read. Ranking edges also limits unnecessary detail and keeps attention on important areas.
