Integrating texture into lighting and perspective
Making texture obey the same light and perspective as the form it sits on.
What it is
Texture must belong to the lit, three-dimensional object it sits on, not just be drawn as pores, scratches, or fabric weave. The bumps on skin, the roughness of stone, and the gloss on leather all respond to the light direction, value range, and depth cues you've already set up.
You adjust texture to match your lighting. Areas facing the light show clearer, sharper texture and highlights; areas turning away lose contrast, soften, and sometimes fade into shadow. On glossy or wet surfaces, texture can nearly disappear into specular glare; on matte surfaces, it stays visible but still follows the light and shadow pattern from your block-in.
Texture also has to respect perspective and depth. Texture close to the camera shows more contrast and finer detail; the same texture in the distance compresses, softens, and shifts with atmospheric perspective (haze and color shift with depth). Surface marks like bricks, tiles, panel lines, and brush strokes follow the same vanishing points as the forms they sit on, reinforcing the 3D space instead of fighting it.
Why it matters
When texture ignores light and perspective, it breaks the illusion of form. Stone with identical contrast in full sun and deep shadow looks pasted on. Brick lines that don't follow the plane's perspective make walls look warped. Overdetailed texture in the distance flattens depth and pulls the eye from the focal point. Texture integrated into light and space reinforces form, depth, and material instead of calling attention to itself.
