Differentiating materials through value, edges, reflections, and texture
Making materials read clearly by controlling value, edges, reflections, and texture, so metal, skin, cloth, and stone don't all feel the same.
What it is
You control four main levers — value, edges, reflections, and texture — to make one material feel distinct from another, even at a glance. For each material you decide: how light or dark it sits overall, how sharp or soft its transitions are, how clearly it mirrors its surroundings, and how much small-scale detail lives on its surface.
On metal, you push high contrast values and sharp, deliberate edges in the highlights and reflections. Reflected shapes are tight and often slightly distorted, and the change from light to dark can be sudden. Texture is implied more by how reflections break and band across the form than by visible pores or grain.
On skin, you keep value transitions softer and more gradual, with edges that tighten only in places like cast shadows or hard anatomical breaks. Reflections are broader and dimmer, often with a slight color shift, not mirror-sharp. Texture shows up as subtle variation in tone and color, not as obvious noise. Cloth often has simple, blocky value groupings with clear folds, edges that range from crisp at fold crests to soft in shadow, and almost no reflections. Stone tends to have chunkier value breaks, irregular edges, and texture built from broken shapes and mottled value patches rather than shine.
In practice, you don't rely on color alone to say "this is metal" or "this is skin." You decide, before detailing, what kind of edge behavior, reflection strength, and texture pattern each material gets, and you keep that behavior consistent across the painting. When two materials touch — leather next to metal, skin against fabric — you make sure their values, edges, and reflections differ enough that they separate cleanly without needing outlines.
Why it matters
When materials all share the same value contrast, edge softness, reflection treatment, and texture noise, everything collapses into one generic surface. Armor looks painted plastic, skin looks like rubber, cloth looks like clay. Forms may be correct, but objects feel weightless and vague because nothing tells the viewer what they are made of. Clear, consistent material treatment lets the viewer understand the object at a glance, supports the story (cold steel versus soft fur), and keeps complex scenes readable even when color information is limited or removed.
