Texture behavior (scale, following form, compression with distance)
Placing texture on the form at the right scale, and compressing it believably with distance.
What it is
Texture behavior is how surface detail sits on a form, instead of floating on top. Scratches curve around a cylinder, bricks wrap a corner, pores follow cheek planes. You place and warp patterns so they follow the underlying 3D shape, not just the 2D silhouette.
Scale is matching the size of the marks to the object. Wood grain on a door reads differently from wood grain on a pencil; skin pores on a face are tiny compared to fabric weave on a shirt. You keep that size relationship consistent within an object and across objects.
Compression with distance is how texture packs closer together as it recedes in space or wraps away from the viewer. Floor tiles look big and spaced out near the camera, then squeeze and thin out toward the horizon. Brick lines on a wall bunch up as the wall turns away. You show this by shrinking gaps, shortening strokes, and softening contrast with distance.
Why it matters
When texture ignores form and distance, the illusion of 3D breaks. Pattern stamps that stay the same size across a surface make objects look flat and cut-out. Skin pores or fabric weave at the same scale on a wrist and on a whole torso make the body feel like a collage. If bricks or tiles don't compress as they recede, perspective falls apart even when the big shapes are right. Get this right and you can suggest a lot of surface detail with very little work, while keeping form and depth solid.
You can check it when
- ✓You can wrap any repeating pattern (bricks, scales, stripes) around simple forms (spheres, cylinders, boxes) so it convincingly follows the volume from any angle.
- ✓Your texture scale stays believable: when you crop and zoom into your painting, small details still match the expected physical size for that material and object.
- ✓Your ground planes and walls show texture that compresses with distance: marks get smaller, closer together, and lower in contrast as they recede.
- ✓When you paint a form turning away from the viewer, the surface detail curves and bunches along the turning edges instead of staying flat and evenly spaced.
