Curvilinear perspective awareness
Recognize and construct curved line behavior in very wide views and extreme camera angles.
What it is
Curvilinear perspective occurs when a very wide field of view makes straight lines in space appear as smooth curves, as in a fisheye photograph. The horizon and vanishing directions remain part of the perspective system, but they follow arcs.
This occurs in corner views of interiors, streets with many verticals and horizontals, and other scenes with a very wide field of view. Parallel walls, floors, and building edges can appear as curves or S-curves. The horizon can bend as well.
You map these directions onto curves around an implied center point. The amount and direction of curvature should support the camera angle and remain consistent across the scene.
Why it matters
Curvilinear perspective helps you draw wide, dynamic views without forcing them into a narrow straight-line grid. Weak control can make a wide view feel cramped, or cause inconsistent curves that make the space appear distorted.
You can check it when
- ✓You identify which edges in wide-angle photo references should curve and which directions they follow.
- ✓You construct a simple curvilinear grid and place buildings, interiors, or streets on it with consistent curvature.
- ✓Your wide views show edge curvature that agrees with one implied center and the chosen camera angle.
