Camera and lens
How camera height, angle, and lens choice change perspective, so you can predict and control distortion in your drawings.
What it is
This skill treats your drawing as if a camera took the picture. You think about where the camera is in space (high, low, close, far), what direction it's pointed, and how "wide" or "zoomed" the lens is. Those decisions explain why verticals tilt, why forms stretch near the edges, and why some subjects loom while others flatten.
In practice, you stop guessing the viewpoint and start choosing it. Before you draw, decide: is this a low, eye-level, or bird's-eye camera? Is it tilted (a "dutch angle") or level? Is it a wide shot that takes in a whole room, or a tight shot that crops to one character? That choice drives how much lines converge, how big near objects feel, and whether edges bend or stay straight.
You also learn to recognize and manage lens effects. A wide field of view makes close objects balloon and stretch toward the viewer, and can curve straight lines near the frame. A longer, "zoomed-in" view compresses space, making objects feel closer together in depth. Curvilinear perspective awareness means knowing that very wide views often bend into arcs instead of a flat grid, and deciding when to show that bend (like wrapping a street scene around your viewpoint) and when to avoid it for clarity.
Why it matters
Without camera and lens awareness, your perspective can look technically "correct" on a flat grid but still feel wrong: characters near the frame edge stretch for no reason, building lines tilt oddly, and the shot reads like an accidental snapshot instead of an intentional one. You default to stiff, eye-level, mid-distance drawings because you don't know how to push a low angle, close-up, or wide shot without breaking believability. Understanding how camera position and lens width affect convergence, scale, and edge distortion lets you design viewpoints that feel cinematic and solid instead of warped or bland.
You can check it when
- ✓You can look at a photo and say whether it was shot with a low, eye-level, or high camera, and roughly how wide the lens was, just from how space is distorted.
- ✓You can choose a viewpoint for a scene (for example: a low, wide shot looking up at a character) and build the perspective so the result feels intentional instead of randomly skewed.
- ✓Your environment drawings (wide scenes, interiors, streets) show believable stretching or curving at the edges on purpose, not accidental, uneven distortion.
- ✓You can compare your drawing to a similar real-world photo and explain where your lines or proportions differ due to lens effects, not just basic perspective mistakes.
