How focal length changes field of view and distortion, and how you choose lens settings for the shot you want to paint over.

What it is

In 3D, lens means your focal length and the field of view it produces: how wide the camera sees, how much it compresses or stretches space, and how strongly it distorts near the frame edges. A short focal length (wide lens) takes in more of the scene but makes near objects feel bigger and far ones feel smaller. A long focal length (telephoto lens) shows a narrower slice and compresses distance.

You pick focal lengths on purpose instead of accepting the software default. For a cramped alley or dramatic hero shot, choose a wider lens so the foreground looms and the background falls away. For orderly architectural key art, choose a longer lens so verticals stay straight and space feels flatter.

When matching 3D to a sketch or reference photo, read the lens behavior first: how strong the perspective convergence is, how much heads and hands enlarge as they near the camera, how far back the background sits. Then adjust focal length and camera distance in 3D until the virtual lens matches, so your paint-over doesn't fight the camera logic.

Why it matters

Wide-angle defaults can make characters' heads bulge and weapons stretch toward the viewer in ways you never intended. Telephoto defaults can flatten dynamic scenes until poses look stiff and detached. Mismatched focal length between your photo refs, 3D block-in, and final paint makes anatomy, props, and environments feel like they belong to different worlds, even if your drawing is accurate. Once you control focal length and field of view, you get consistent distortion, believable scale, and a camera look that supports your story instead of fighting it.
