Material families
Grouping materials by how light behaves on them, so you aren't inventing that behavior from scratch every time you paint.
What it is
Material families group objects by how light behaves on them, not by their specific photo reference: metal, fabric, glass, and so on. Each family has a typical highlight sharpness, shadow depth, and reflectivity. You paint that shared behavior first, then layer on surface detail and weathering.
You decide an object's family first — metal, plastic, glass, stone, wood, fabric, leather, fur, skin — and that choice narrows your options. Metals need clear, structured reflections. Fabric folds soften highlights into bands. Glass and other refractives distort what's behind them. Skin mixes soft sheen with subsurface scattering, light bleeding just under the surface.
On a deadline, this lets you block in a believable metal railing, fabric banner, stone wall, leather strap, and glass bottle using simple shapes and lighting alone, before any texture pass or photo reference. It also keeps a scene consistent: every metal reads as the same kind of metal, every fabric as fabric, instead of each object looking like an unrelated experiment.
Why it matters
Without material families, every object becomes a one-off puzzle: metal can look like gray plastic, fabric can shine like chrome, stone can read as soft rubber. Scenes end up mismatched, as if the objects don't share a physical reality. Grouping materials by their light behavior keeps a scene coherent, speeds up rendering under deadline, and lets you adjust designs without losing believability.
You can check it when
