Texture versus material

Separating small surface detail from the material underneath, so you render each at the right level of importance.

What it is

Material is the underlying substance: metal, skin, fabric, stone, plastic. It governs the surface's big behaviors — how it reflects light, how sharp or soft its shading is, how much it shines, and how it behaves at the lightest lights and darkest darks.

Texture is the small-scale variation on top of that material: pores, scratches, weave, bumps, brush marks, grain. Think of it as the visible “noise” riding on the simpler material read.

You decide material first: how broad the value shifts are, how crisp the highlights are, how uniform or blotchy the base tone is. Then you layer texture where needed, without contradicting that base. Polished metal can have scratches and still reflect like metal; skin can have pores and freckles and the light still rolls across it softly.

Paint a clean, simple pass that nails material qualities first, then add texture only where it supports the design and lighting. Keep asking: does this mark change what the object is made of, or is it just surface chatter? Adjust your brushwork, contrast, and edge control accordingly.

Why it matters

Blur texture and material together and surfaces either look like the wrong stuff or collapse into noisy static. Over-detailing pores, scratches, or weave without a clear material base turns skin into concrete, leather into plastic, metal into gray mush. Fake material with random noise alone and everything feels the same. Separating the two keeps materials readable at a glance, with texture as a supporting actor instead of taking over the image.
