Maintaining value structure while adding detail
Preserving the main light and shadow pattern while adding smaller forms, textures, and accents.
What it is
Begin with a simple separation between light and shadow. Add forms, edges, and textures while keeping the light areas from moving toward mid-gray and the shadows from gaining scattered lights.
Compare each new mark with the larger value shapes. Keep light-side details lighter than the shadow edge, and shadow-side details darker than the light edge.
Work from broad shapes to narrow details. Recheck the block-in at each pass, reduce marks that disrupt the pattern, and place stronger contrast where it supports the main read.
Why it matters
Maintaining the value structure keeps the drawing readable as details accumulate. Weak control can make the image noisy or muddy, with strong darks in light areas and bright marks in shadows.
You can check it when
- ✓Compare the finished drawing with the first block-in and identify the same main light and shadow pattern.
- ✓Squint at the finished piece. Details recede while the larger lights and darks remain readable.
- ✓Check that shadow areas contain variation while staying darker than light-side halftones.
- ✓Blur, erase, or simplify an over-detailed area and verify that the value structure remains intact.
