Value structure in practice
Laying down a clear, simple value plan and keeping it readable from thumbnail to final, even as you add detail and texture.
What it is
Value structure in practice is where you stop just seeing values and start arranging them on the page with intent. Before you render pores, folds, or textures, you decide where the big light and dark shapes go, how they relate, and how much contrast each area gets. That scaffold is what all later shading must respect.
In practice, this means starting with rough, blocky tones instead of polishing right away. You squint at your subject, drop in broad light and shadow masses, and check them at a small size or from a distance. If the pose, depth, and focus read clearly at that rough stage, your value structure is solid. Only then do you move on to gradations and edges.
As you render, the job becomes not losing that structure. Every wrinkle, reflected light, and texture stays inside the value limits you already set. Compare back to your block-in or thumbnail: if a highlight pops in a quiet area, or a shadow creeps lighter than your lit midtones, correct it so the original plan holds.
Why it matters
Without a strong value structure, your drawing can be accurate but still unreadable: faces flatten, forms merge into the background, and the eye doesn't know where to go. Details compete instead of support, and shrinking the image collapses it into a muddy gray blob. A maintained value structure keeps the image legible at every stage — shapes stay clear, depth is obvious, and the final rendering looks intentional rather than overworked.
You can check it when
- ✓You can stop a piece at the block-in stage and it already reads clearly for light, depth, and main shapes.
- ✓Your thumbnails stay legible and close to your final values, and shrinking a finished piece still shows the same light/dark pattern as your early plan.
- ✓You can add fine detail without your shadows climbing too light or your lights sinking too dark — the big value groups stay easy to spot.
- ✓Looking over several pieces, your "finished" drawings don't turn to mush when viewed small.
