Organizing values before rendering

Plan the main light, midtone, and shadow groups before adding detail or texture.

What it is

Organizing values means deciding the main light and dark shapes while the drawing is still simple. You block in light, midtone, and shadow areas before adding texture or detail.

A quick value plan can use charcoal or graphite. Simplify folds, hair, and background clutter into a few value masses. Keep shadows in a dark group, lights in a light group, and midtones between them.

As you refine, compare each stroke with the plan. Keep it within the light, midtone, or shadow group, while adjusting edges, shapes, and smaller value shifts.

Why it matters

A value plan helps keep the main light and dark pattern stable during rendering. Weak organization can cause shadows to lighten, lights to darken, and small contrasts to compete with the main structure. Forms may flatten, or faces may merge with backgrounds.
