Equal spacing, repeating elements, subdivision, and diagonals
Placing repeated elements and equal divisions in perspective so spacing and tiling stay believable as they recede.
What it is
You place repeated things in space without eyeballing each gap: windows on a building, fence posts, floor tiles, lamp posts along a road, steps on a staircase. Perspective rules keep their spacing, angles, and sizes consistent as they recede.
You start with two known points and find the ones between them: halving a distance between two posts, then halving again for quarters; tracing a diagonal across floor tiles to keep their corners in line; running perspective lines through repeated ceiling beams to keep their rhythm consistent in depth. You're constructing the pattern, not copying it from a reference.
Diagonals do most of the work. A diagonal across a rectangle finds its center in perspective; two diagonals cross into an X you can subdivide again. Dropping diagonals across a grid gives evenly spaced divisions that shrink correctly with distance — on a brick wall, a tiled plaza, or a row of balcony railings.
Why it matters
Without this, repeated elements in a scene fall apart: floor tiles bunch up or stretch, railings go off rhythm, windows drift out of alignment. Viewers may not know why, but the scene reads as crooked or collaged. Dividing space with diagonals lets you build repeatable structure instead of faking it, so your environments hold together.
