You design buildings and built spaces, inside and out, so they're structurally sound, usable, and connected to roads and circulation.
What it is
Built environments include anything humans (or similar beings) construct: houses, towers, shops, factories, castles, space stations, corridors, plazas, bridges, streets, and alleys. You invent and draw these structures so they look buildable and usable, not pasted onto a landscape.
You think in rooms, floors, load-bearing walls, roofs, stairs, and doors, and how people move through them. Interiors are laid out so furniture fits, doors open, and people can walk around and see out windows. Exteriors show how those interiors stack and connect: where the stairwell sits, where plumbing or chimneys go, where balconies need support, and how roofs shed water or snow.
Roads and paths are part of the same system: streets, courtyards, ramps, and walkways that connect entrances, landmarks, and key spaces. You show how vehicles turn, park, or dock, and how pedestrians climb, cross, queue, or wait. The result is a network of built forms and circulation that feels like a real place, not a backdrop of random shapes.
Why it matters
Without this skill, environments look like cardboard sets: buildings float on the ground plane, walls don't line up with interiors, roofs ignore gravity, doors open into nowhere, and roads don't lead where they should. Viewers may not know the architectural rules by name, but they feel the mismatch instantly and stop believing in the world. Once you can design built environments, your scenes gain weight and clarity: characters have places to live and move through, shots connect to each other, and teams downstream (3D, level design, layout) can build from your work.
You can check it when
- ✓You can sketch a building's outside, then quickly block in a floor plan that fits inside that silhouette (rooms, corridors, and stairs all line up).
- ✓Your interiors show believable wall thickness, door and window placement, and furniture spacing—there's room to walk, sit, and open things without overlap.
- ✓Your roofs, balconies, bridges, and overhangs feel structurally supported, with columns, beams, or bracing where they're needed.
- ✓Your streets, alleys, and paths connect entrances, focal buildings, and gathering spots instead of dead-ending or ignoring how people and vehicles move.
