Designing believable roofs, doors, windows, and stairs as reusable building blocks you can vary, combine, and draw from any angle.
What it is
You treat architectural parts as reusable components, not one-off decorations. You know what makes a stair a stair, a window a window, and a roof a roof: where each sits, how it connects to walls and floors, and its typical shape and size. You can draw them in simple boxy form, then add detail without losing that clarity.
You can rough out roof types — gable, hip, flat, shed — decide how each meets the walls, and add overhangs, gutters, and chimneys that feel buildable. Doors and windows line up with the floors, have frames, sills, and thickness, and repeat across a facade in an organized rhythm instead of as random holes.
For stairs, you know the rhythm of treads (what you stand on), risers (the vertical part), landings, and railings. You can plan how they move through space — straight runs, L-shaped, U-shaped, spiral — and make them fit cleanly between floors instead of guessing the angle. All of these components can be turned in perspective, scaled up or down, and combined into new designs while still reading instantly as what they are.
Why it matters
Without solid component design, buildings fail at the level viewers actually read: doors too small to use, windows floating on the wall, stairs that don't reach the floor above, roofs that don't seem to shelter anything. These mistakes break believability even when your silhouette is strong, and make the world feel like a backdrop instead of a place. When your components are consistent and functional, you can iterate fast, keep perspective under control, and ground story and style in believable detail.

- ✓You can rotate these components in perspective — corner views, low angles, high angles — and they still read as usable, buildable parts, not flat symbols.
