Complex subjects in perspective
Construct figures, vehicles, organic forms, shadows, and reflections within the same perspective space.
What it is
Perspective applies to subjects with specific, irregular forms. You place people, vehicles, organic objects, cast shadows, and reflections within a shared space by tracking their depth, orientation, proportions, and angles.
You can reduce a subject to simple perspective scaffolding before adding detail. Figures use boxes, cylinders, and wedges. Vehicles begin as forms aligned to the ground plane. Organic objects follow major axes and cross-contours that turn through space.
Shadows and reflections are shapes placed on existing surfaces. Their length, direction, and distortion must agree with the light direction, surface, and perspective of the scene.
Why it matters
This skill helps complex subjects share the same spatial structure. Weak control can make figures float, vehicles lose contact with the ground, organic forms drift from the scene, or shadows and reflections conflict with the surfaces they touch.
You can check it when
- ✓Block in a figure, vehicle, or creature with simple perspective forms, then add detail while retaining its solid orientation in space.
- ✓Place multiple figures or vehicles at different depths, and verify their scale, ground contact, horizon alignment, and major axes.
- ✓Construct trees, rocks, or creatures whose major axes and cross-contours follow the scene’s perspective.
- ✓Place cast shadows and reflections on surfaces with directions and distortions that match the light setup and perspective.
