Shadows and reflections

Drawing cast shadows and reflections in believable perspective so they sit solidly on the ground and match the forms that create them.

What it is

You build shadows and reflections with the same geometric logic you use for boxes and buildings. A cast shadow is a solid shape in perspective: it has a light-source origin, a direction, and falls across planes that recede toward vanishing points. You find where the light rays hit the ground or other surfaces, then connect those points to where the object touches it.

For simple forms — boxes, cylinders, spheres — you construct shadows by projecting their corners or key contour points along the light direction, then dropping those projections onto the ground plane. The shadow edges follow the perspective of that plane, narrowing toward its vanishing points like tiles or floorboards do. You check that contact points line up: the shadow starts exactly where the object touches the surface, not floating or offset.

Reflections work the same way. A reflection on a flat surface like calm water or a polished floor is a flipped version of the object across that surface, still obeying the same horizon and vanishing points. You mirror heights across the reflecting plane (same distance above and below), then pull any horizontal edges back to the same vanishing points as the real object. As with shadows, you treat the reflection as a constructed shape, not an afterthought.

Why it matters

Without perspective-aware shadows and reflections, objects look pasted onto the background instead of standing in it. Floors feel slippery, and mirrored surfaces don't show what's actually there. Once you build these shapes with the same construction lines as everything else, your drawing shares one consistent ground and light, so even simple shapes feel planted and believable.
