Placing the human figure solidly in 3D space, with believable perspective, foreshortening, and rotation of the body and limbs.
What it is
You make the figure sit convincingly in a scene, not float on the page. You decide where the viewer stands, where the ground plane is, and how the body relates to it — the pose, its tilt, and where the feet touch the ground all follow from that same setup.
You treat the figure as a 3D object that can turn, lean, and recede. Limbs and torsos foreshorten when they point toward or away from the viewer: an arm coming at the camera looks shorter, overlaps itself, and lines up with the perspective of the environment or an imagined box around the figure. Volumes stay consistent as they rotate, so a leg seen from the front, three‑quarter, or back still reads as the same leg in 3D.
This is a kind of mental rotation: you imagine the mannequin figure turning in space, then draw what that turn looks like from your chosen viewpoint. As you change camera angle — looking up, down, or at an extreme tilt — you adjust the ellipses of rib cage, pelvis, and joints, and keep every part of the figure sharing the same vanishing points and horizon line.
Why it matters
Without this, figures feel pasted onto the scene instead of standing in it. Poses that should be dynamic turn stiff because you avoid pointing limbs at the viewer. Feet slide off the ground plane, heads feel detached from the body, and overlapping forms don't show which part is in front. Perspective mistakes in the figure clash with the perspective of props and backgrounds, breaking believability and confusing what the character is doing or where they stand.
You can check it when
- ✓You can place a standing figure on a ground plane at different camera heights (eye level, looking up, looking down) and the feet still feel firmly planted.
- ✓You can draw a limb or whole figure pointing toward or away from the viewer with clear foreshortening, without hiding it behind profile or straight-on views.
- ✓You can rotate a simple mannequin figure in 45–90° steps around the vertical axis and keep its proportions and volumes consistent in each view.
- ✓Your figures, props, and simple background elements all obey the same horizon line and vanishing directions, so the body feels locked into the same space as the environment.
