Lighting scenarios (interior, exterior daylight, sunrise/sunset, overcast, night, artificial)
Recognizing and reproducing the value, color, and contrast patterns of common lighting scenarios so scenes feel believable and specific.
What it is
This skill is knowing what different lighting situations actually look like, and painting those patterns on purpose. Interior daylight, harsh midday sun, soft overcast, golden hour, neon-lit night streets — each has a typical range of values, color biases, contrasts, and how sharply forms are defined.
In practice, you can look at a reference or a brief and say "this is overcast" or "this is late afternoon indoors" and then commit to the consequences: how bright the light side gets, how dark the shadows go, how saturated the colors are, and what hue the light and shadow tend toward. You don't just add a warm rim light and call it sunset; you change the whole scene's value structure and color relationships to match sunrise/sunset behavior.
On the job, this shows up as painting a character sheet with consistent soft studio light, then an illustration of the same character in midday exterior, then a story shot of them under cool fluorescent office lights — each one clearly a different scenario, but all still coherent and believable. When someone asks you for "overcast" instead of "heroic sunset", you know what to actually change in your painting.
Why it matters
Without a grasp of lighting scenarios, everything collapses into generic, made-up light that feels floaty or inconsistent. Exteriors may look lit by an invisible spotlight instead of the sky, night scenes may read as day with a blue filter, and interiors may ignore how walls and ceilings limit and bounce light. Viewers feel this as "off" even without knowing why. Once you know each scenario's visual rules, you can ground any scene in a clear time and place, and stop fighting contradictions in value and color across the image.
You can check it when
- ✓Your paintings clearly reflect differences in value range, shadow strength, and color temperature between midday sun, overcast, golden hour, and night.
- ✓You can repaint the same simple scene (a figure by a window, a street corner) in at least three scenarios — e.g. interior daylight, overcast exterior, and night with street lamps — and each version clearly reads as its intended time and setting without labels.
- ✓Your night scenes are not just darker and bluer day scenes: light sources, lit areas, and unlit areas have distinct value jumps, and the sky and materials behave believably for night.
- ✓Your interior scenes show believable limits and bounces of light (walls, ceilings, and lamps affecting value and color), while your exterior daylight scenes feel open and shaped mainly by sky and sun rather than random spotlights.
