Atmospheric color
Color shifts from air and distance that show depth and mood — not just perspective lines and size changes.
What it is
Atmospheric color is how air, distance, and particles between you and an object tint and soften its colors. Far mountains look bluer and lighter, distant buildings lose saturation, sunsets wash the whole scene in orange or pink. You don't just copy this — you control it.
In practice, you decide how the atmosphere shifts hue (color family), saturation (intensity), and value (lightness or darkness) as things recede or sit in different air. Hazy, humid air desaturates and lightens distant colors; dry, clear air keeps colors stronger for longer distances but still nudges them toward the sky color.
You use these shifts to separate foreground, midground, and background. For example: warm, saturated rocks in front; slightly cooler, duller trees behind them; pale, bluish hills in the far back. You push or pull these choices to match the mood — clean crisp air, smoky battlefield, foggy forest, alien planet with a colored sky.
Why it matters
Without atmospheric color, depth relies only on size, overlap, and perspective. Scenes look flat, like cardboard layers glued together. Colors in the distance fight with foreground colors, value groups tangle, and it's hard to tell what is close or far. When you control atmospheric color, you can group space clearly, guide the eye through the scene, and sell time of day and weather with very few strokes.
