Light behavior

Understanding how light behaves in space so your choices about direction, softness, and secondary light feel believable.

What it is

Light moves through space in predictable ways — it isn't a vague brightness slider. You think about where it comes from, how it weakens with distance, how big the source is, and what it hits or misses along the way.

In practice, you pick a clear direction for the main light, decide how quickly it falls off, and keep that falloff consistent across the scene. A character next to a lamp shows sharper contrast and faster value change than one lit by a dim window across the room — the same rule applies to props, backgrounds, and small details.

You also separate different kinds of light as you paint: focused, directional light (sun, a spotlight), soft ambient light that fills in shadows, and broad environmental light from the sky or walls. You track where light bounces from one surface onto another, and where it barely reaches at all — ambient occlusion, the tight dark pockets in corners and creases.

Once you think this way, you can look at any form and ask what's lighting it directly, what's filling it indirectly, how hard the transitions should be, and where bounced or missing light should show up. Your rendering starts to feel like it lives in real space instead of being patched together piece by piece.

Why it matters

Without this, your scenes end up with random brightness: shadows that are just "dark areas," highlights placed wherever you want contrast, and objects that look pasted into the environment rather than lit by it. Edges switch from sharp to soft for no reason, forms flatten because bounce light and ambient occlusion are missing or overdone, and viewers can't tell where the light is coming from. Once you respect how light travels, your value, edge, and secondary-light decisions become consistent, and the whole picture feels like one believable world.
