Maintaining proportions through perspective

Keeping body proportions believable as they rotate, foreshorten, and move in perspective, not just in straight-on views.

What it is

You take the proportions you know from a neutral pose — head height, limb lengths, shoulder width, pelvis size — and keep them consistent as the figure turns, sits, or leans toward the camera. The body's size relationships shouldn't change just because the angle does.

In practice, you combine proportion with basic perspective: treat major body masses — head, ribcage, pelvis, limbs — as 3D forms on a perspective grid. As they angle toward or away from you, their apparent size on the page shortens or lengthens, but their true size stays the same.

You check figures by more than head-count height, tracing how those measurements line up in depth. You compare the near hand to the far hand, the near foot to the far foot, the closer shoulder to the farther shoulder, and adjust until the foreshortening reads as rotation, not random stretching or shrinking.

Why it matters

Without this, figures fall apart once they leave a flat, standing pose: heads balloon near the camera, legs shorten when a character leans back, arms change length between panels. Good anatomy doesn't save it — these shifts break believability, so characters stop looking like the same person from shot to shot, and extreme angles become hard to read in space.
