Timed gesture (30-second to 2-minute poses)
Timed gesture is a rapid whole-figure drawing practice that captures action, placement, and major angles in 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
What it is
Timed gesture drawing captures the figure’s main action and placement before the timer ends. It uses 30-second, 1-minute, or 2-minute poses and leaves out small details.
Begin with 1 to 4 large lines or shapes for the head direction, spine sweep, rib cage and pelvis tilts, foot placement, and limb reach. Work from large forms to small ones, filling the page with multiple figures.
Practice from photo references, life drawing, or pose timers. Check whether each drawing shows the action, major angles, and the space occupied by the figure before moving to the next pose.
Why it matters
Timed gesture helps you explore many pose options quickly and carry the figure’s action into later structure, anatomy, and rendering. Weak control can lead to slow, stiff drawings and early focus on details before the pose is established.
You can check it when
- ✓Fill a page with 10 to 20 poses lasting 30 to 60 seconds, with each drawing showing the figure’s action.
- ✓Complete a readable whole-body pose in 2 minutes while keeping the head, rib cage, pelvis, and feet placed in relation to one another.
- ✓Review 30 to 50 timed gestures and identify consistent starting lines, with fewer scratchy searches or unfinished torsos.
