Silhouette readability
Make characters and objects readable as flat silhouettes, with clear pose, action, and type from the outer contour.
What it is
Silhouette readability measures whether a character or object still makes sense as a flat, filled shape. It uses the outer contour without interior lines or detail.
Pose limbs so they separate from the torso, space shapes to prevent merging, and keep fingers, legs, and props distinct in the outline. Check the silhouette at thumbnail size or as a solid fill, then adjust overlaps and contours.
Use this check in rough thumbnails and finished designs for characters, vehicles, weapons, and props. A readable outline supports recognition at a distance, as a UI icon, or in a crowded scene.
Why it matters
Weak silhouettes can hide limbs, obscure the action, and make figures blend together at small sizes. Strong contour control lets the main idea read before interior detail is added.
You can check it when
- ✓Fill character and prop sketches solid black. You can identify each subject and its action from the silhouette alone.
- ✓Pose a figure so its limbs, hands, and head remain separate from the torso in the filled outline.
- ✓Shrink or squint at thumbnails and identify each subject and action from the silhouette.
- ✓Change a pose or contour, then describe which outline change made the silhouette easier to read.
