Exploration (thumbnails, shapes, silhouettes)
Test composition ideas through small thumbnails, flat shapes, and silhouettes before choosing a direction.
What it is
Create multiple small thumbnails, or rough drawings, to test value masses, focal points, camera distance, and staging. These studies focus on the overall read, not detail.
Block poses, props, or environments as flat dark and light shapes. Use them to check pose clarity, grouping, object design, proportion, overlap, and spacing.
Compare the studies side by side. Remove weaker options, mark promising ones, and develop variations before committing to a composition.
Why it matters
Exploration helps you find composition problems while they are inexpensive to change. It can reveal crowded staging, unclear poses, misplaced focal points, and tangents before detailed rendering.
You can check it when
- ✓Fill a page with small thumbnails or silhouettes and compare them before choosing a composition.
- ✓Check each study at a glance for focal point, action, and basic mood, including poses and main objects shown as black-and-white silhouettes.
- ✓Identify meaningful differences across a group of studies, such as camera angle, scale, focal point placement, or staging.
