Limbs and extremities as simple forms (arms, legs, hands, feet)
Breaking arms, legs, hands, and feet into simple 3D blocks and cylinders so you can place and turn them in space before adding detail.
What it is
You treat each limb as a stack of basic 3D pieces instead of a tangle of anatomy. Upper arm, forearm, thigh, and calf become cylinders or boxy wedges, with clear joints where they hinge, twist, or bend. Fingers and toes become small boxes or cylinders chained together, not tiny, complicated sculptures.
You start a pose by laying in these simple forms with clear direction: which way the cylinder is pointing, how much it foreshortens, how the box of the hand tilts relative to the forearm. You indicate top, side, and front planes so you always know what part is facing you, before you add muscles, tendons, or nails.
When you draw from reference, you interpret the real arm or foot into these primitives: you ignore veins and wrinkles and ask, "What is the big block here? What is the main cylinder?" When you draw from imagination, you build the pose out of these same parts first and only then refine into a more anatomical shape.
Why it matters
Without this, limbs and extremities drift off model: elbows float, knees bend the wrong way, hands pancake, and feet look stuck on rather than bearing weight. You end up copying outlines and wrinkles but you cannot rotate the pose, push the gesture, or fix awkward angles because there is no mental structure underneath. Once you can reduce arms, legs, hands, and feet to simple forms, you can aim them, twist them, and plant them solidly in space; details ride on top of a stable, readable structure instead of patching it afterward.
