Building feet as solid forms with clear toes and working ankles, so they stay believable from any angle or pose.

What it is

Foot construction treats the foot as a stack of simple, solid forms instead of a flat shoe shape: a boxy heel, an arched mid‑foot, a wedge for the forefoot, and cylinders or boxy blocks for each toe. You place these forms in perspective so the foot reads with real thickness from above, below, front, and back.

Toes are a fan of individual forms sharing a base. You place the big toe as its own larger block, then arrange the smaller toes along a curved arc, each with at least two segments (base and tip). You show how they sit on the ground, overlap, and shift spacing and angle as the foot relaxes, spreads, or curls — not a single mitten-like lump.

Ankle mechanics is how the foot connects and moves at the joint. You place the ankle bones at different heights (inner bump higher than outer), wrap them around the cylinder of the lower leg, and let the foot block hinge up and down and twist slightly at the ankle. You draw the lower leg and foot as two distinct masses with a believable hinge, not one fused tube with a triangle stuck on the end.

Why it matters

Without solid construction, feet flatten into triangles, sausages, or soft shoe prints. Toes merge into a blob, ankle bones float or vanish, and off-angle views look deformed or inconsistent. Weak ankle mechanics also stiffen poses: the foot cannot convincingly point, flex, or twist, so gestures lose power. Building the foot as interlocking forms with a real ankle joint lets you turn it in space, match camera angles, and keep it consistent from shot to shot.
