Hand construction (palm, fingers, thumb mechanics)
Building the hand as a solid, jointed structure so the palm, fingers, and thumb work together in believable 3D space.
What it is
Hand construction means you stop copying a hand's outline and instead build it from simple 3D parts: the palm as a block with thickness, the fingers as jointed cylinders, and the thumb as its own branch off the side of the palm. Think in planes and corners, and how these parts hinge and twist — not just how they look flat.
You can sketch the palm as a wedge-like box that widens at the knuckles, with clear sides and a heel. From that box, attach four finger units along the top edge — spaced and angled, not lined up like a rake. Each finger breaks into three segments with visible joints that follow an arc across the knuckles, not a straight line. Fingers taper, curve slightly toward the middle finger, and share a common base mass.
The thumb doesn't grow from the front of the palm — it comes off a separate, rotated "tube" on the side. You can show its base mass (the thenar pad) bulging and shifting, and how it opposes (touches the fingers) because its first joint swivels differently from the fingers'. When you pose it, think about rotating around that base, not just bending it like a fifth finger.
Why it matters
Without solid hand construction, hands collapse into flat, rubbery shapes or break down whenever the pose gets complex. Fingers end up the same length, knuckles land in the wrong places, and the thumb sticks out at impossible angles. Even with good gesture, small structural errors in joints and proportions break the illusion. Once you can build the palm, fingers, and thumb as connected 3D forms, you can rotate them in space, light them believably, and reuse that mental model in any style or level of detail.

- ✓You can draw a hand starting from a simple 3D palm block and finger/thumb masses, then refine, instead of starting from the outline.
- ✓You can place knuckles and finger joints along believable arcs, with correct segment lengths and taper, without relying on a photo in front of you.
- ✓You can attach the thumb from the correct side plane of the palm, showing its base mass and rotation, not just a flat triangle stuck to the index finger.
- ✓Your hands look structurally consistent across different angles: the relationships of palm size, finger length, and thumb position stay stable from drawing to drawing.
