Understanding and drawing the spine, rib cage, and pelvis as the structural core that holds the figure together in space.

What it is

This is knowing the shapes, proportions, and typical curves of the spine, rib cage, and pelvis, and how they stack into the torso. You can drop a simple, accurate “core” into any pose: a column for the spine's S-curve, an egg or barrel for the rib cage, and a block or bowl for the pelvis — all oriented in 3D and locked together.

The spine is more than a straight stick: it has cervical (neck), thoracic (rib area), and lumbar (lower back) sections, each with different curves and ranges of motion. You can show flexion (bending), extension (arching), and twisting while keeping the S-curve believable and connected from head to pelvis.

The rib cage is a solid, directional mass, not a chest outline. You can tilt, twist, and foreshorten it while keeping its volume and its relation to the shoulders and waist. The pelvis is likewise a solid form you can turn in space — with a clear front, sides, and back, and a tilt that shows where the legs and spine attach.

This shows up when you block in a figure from imagination or a tough reference. You start from the axial skeleton to set the body's center line, the torso's direction, the figure's height, and where the weight is going. Limbs, muscles, and clothing then hang off this core instead of guessing their placement.

Why it matters

Without a solid grasp of the spine, rib cage, and pelvis, figures collapse into bent sausages: poses feel rubbery, twists look broken, and weight distribution is vague. The torso may not match the hips, or the neck may seem disconnected from the chest. Clothing folds and muscle groups lose logic without believable structure underneath. Once the axial skeleton is clear in your mind and drawings, you can pose bodies with confidence, rotate them in space, and keep proportions and balance consistent.
