How your rib cage and pelvis tilt and twist against each other, so figures read as moving bodies instead of stiff blocks.
What it is
Torso dynamics is reading and inventing the directions of the rib cage and pelvis: is the chest leaning forward or back, tilted to one side, or twisted against the hips. You state that clearly in your gesture and construction lines.
You treat rib cage and pelvis as two solid units linked by a flexible spine. In a standing pose, angle the rib cage one way and the pelvis the other. In a crouch or reach, show the chest folding toward or away from the pelvis, or rotating while the hips stay planted.
On the page, this shows up as opposing angles and twists: the front of the rib cage against the front of the pelvis, the top plane of the shoulders against the top plane of the hips. In thumbnails or quick sketches, reducing a figure to these two blocks still reads as strong action and attitude.
Why it matters
When the torso is a generic tube, poses look stiff and weightless no matter how well the limbs are drawn. If rib cage and pelvis always face the same way, you lose twist, bend, and compression at the waist, and figures read as mannequins with glued spines. Clear torso dynamics sells weight shift, gesture, and emotion with very few lines.
You can check it when
