Shoulder girdle (scapula, clavicle)
How the shoulder blade and collarbone move under the skin — so you can place, pose, and connect the arms convincingly.
What it is
The shoulder girdle links the arms to the torso: two shoulder blades (scapulae) on the back, and two collarbones (clavicles) running from the chest to each shoulder. In drawing, it sets the width and tilt of the shoulders, the base of the neck, and where the arms attach.
You track the scapula as a floating plate on the rib cage: sliding, rotating, and tilting as the arm lifts, reaches forward, or pulls back. Look for the ridge along the upper back, the corner near the armpit, and the spine of the scapula lining up with the rear head of the deltoid. The clavicle reads as a shallow S-curve from the pit of the neck to the shoulder cap, changing angle with every shrug or hunch.
When you pose a figure, set the shoulder girdle before committing to the arms: how wide it is, how much it tilts, and whether it's shrugged, rolled forward, or pulled back. That gives clear landmarks for the neck, chest, and deltoids, and shows how far the arm can move before it looks dislocated.
Why it matters
Without a clear shoulder girdle, arms look pasted on and shoulders float free of the torso — the humerus seems to grow from the side of the rib cage rather than a shoulder mass, and collarbones don't match the angle of the shoulders. Knowing the scapula and clavicle keeps arm poses within believable ranges of motion and makes clothing, traps, and deltoids sit logically on the body.
You can check it when

- ✓You can draw the scapula's main angles — top, spine, lower tip — from front, side, and back views, and show how they shift as the arm lifts, reaches forward, or pulls back.
- ✓Your arms attach into a clear shoulder mass, not the side of the rib cage; the deltoid wraps consistently from clavicle and scapula onto the humerus.
- ✓In your figures, shrugged, relaxed, and pulled-back shoulders all look distinct, and the collarbones and upper-back planes shift to support each pose.
