Arm muscles (upper arm, forearm, hand)
You know the arm and hand's main muscles well enough to draw solid, believable arms in any pose or lighting.
What it is
You learn the arm's main muscle groups: biceps and triceps on the upper arm, flexor and extensor masses on the forearm, and the forms that shape the back of the hand and palm. You're not memorizing every muscle — just the big shapes that show on the surface.
You can look at a flexed arm and know what's creating each bump, groove, and plane change: where the biceps starts and fades, how the triceps fills the back of the arm, and how forearm muscles bunch near the elbow then taper into tendons at the wrist.
For the hand, you know the muscle pads at the thumb and pinky side, and how tendons on the back of the hand sit over the forearm's long muscles. Drawing a fist or spread hand, you can place knuckles, tendons, and pads to match the bones and muscles underneath, not guesswork wrinkles.
Why it matters
Without this, arms become smooth tubes with random dents, and hands look like stiff gloves or symbols. Muscles pop or vanish in the wrong places when the arm bends, and you avoid angles you can't make convincing. Knowing the main arm and hand muscles lets you vary tension, age, body type, and lighting while staying believable — so characters can act, gesture, and hold objects without the viewer noticing bad anatomy.
You can check it when
- ✓You can draw a relaxed and a flexed arm from the same angle, with muscle changes that look intentional, not random.
- ✓You can place the main upper-arm and forearm masses correctly around the elbow, in front and side views, without tracing a reference.
- ✓You can draw the back of the hand with knuckles and tendons, and the palm with thumb and pinky pads, and it still reads as the same hand from any angle.
- ✓Your arms and hands stay structured under simple shading or flat color — you don't need heavy rendering or outlines to hide uncertain anatomy.
