Muscle changes during movement
How muscles shift, bulge, and relax as the body moves, so your figures change believably from pose to pose.
What it is
Muscles are not static labels on a diagram. As joints bend, straighten, twist, or stretch, muscles change shape: they contract and thicken, lengthen and flatten, slide under neighboring forms, and some disappear from view while others pop out.
You track which side of a joint is doing the work. The working (contracting) side tends to shorten, bunch, and show clearer separation; the opposite (stretching) side smooths out and becomes less defined. When someone bends an elbow, flexes a foot, raises an arm, or turns their torso, you can predict which muscle groups will show more volume and which will taper off.
This means you do not copy one “anatomy look” onto every pose. You adjust outlines, planes, and contours to match the action: a relaxed arm has softer transitions and less visible separation; a braced, weight-bearing leg shows stronger cords, bulges, and sharper grooves where muscles press against each other or the skin.
Why it matters
Without this, your anatomy looks pasted-on and robotic — muscles stay equally bumpy in relaxed and tense poses, and limbs read like mannequins with drawn-on fibers. Poses that should feel heavy or explosive look empty, and subtle gestures feel stiff because the body's surface never reacts to what the skeleton is doing. Track muscle changes with movement and your figures gain believable tension and weight, staying consistent as the same character moves from pose to pose.
You can check it when
- ✓You can point to a limb in your drawing, name which side is contracting versus stretching, and your forms clearly show that difference in thickness and definition.
- ✓You can draw one character in at least three different actions (reach, squat, twist) and the muscle shapes change in each without breaking anatomy believability.
- ✓Your flexed poses (lifting, pushing, bracing) show sharper grooves and fuller bulges in key muscle groups, while your resting poses show smoother, less segmented surfaces instead of the same “anatomy noise” everywhere.
- ✓When you study photo or video reference, you can sketch over it and indicate where muscles have shortened, lengthened, or slid under others as the pose changes.
