Breaking complex objects and references into primitives
Reducing complex subjects into simple boxes, cylinders, and spheres so you can understand and construct them accurately in 3D.
What it is
You look at a car, a tree, or a shoe and see boxes, cylinders, wedges, and spheres before you see contours. You sketch these big, simple solids first, capturing overall size, tilt, and direction before refining the exact outline.
You treat the reference as if it were made of toy blocks: a torso becomes a ribcage egg plus a boxy pelvis, a chair becomes a few boxes and cylinders, a head starts as a ball with a sliced-off side and a jaw block. Once the primitives sit correctly in space, you carve, add, and refine toward the specific design.
This shows up as loose construction passes under your drawings: light lines for boxes and cylinders setting perspective and proportion, then cleaner lines following those guides. When a tricky angle in a photo stumps you, redraw the object as stacked primitives, then build the final drawing on that simplified version.
Why it matters
Without this, complex objects stay intimidating masses of detail, and you end up copying outlines and shading patches without understanding what they belong to. Small proportion errors stack up, foreshortening looks off, and rotating the subject from reference becomes hard. With primitives in place, you control the big structure: perspective gets easier, poses and camera angles become flexible, and details sit on solid forms instead of holding the picture together on their own.
