Blocking out and adjusting simple 3D forms you can light, pose, and paint over reliably.

What it is

You take basic shapes — cubes, spheres, cylinders, planes — and push, pull, scale, and rotate them into the rough forms a shot needs. You're not sculpting hero game assets; you're building stand-ins for buildings, vehicles, props, and rough characters that get finished in paint.

You work comfortably in object mode (moving whole pieces) and edit mode (changing the shape itself). In edit mode you select and edit vertices, edges, and faces on purpose, not by accident. You know when to extrude a face to grow new parts, inset to create rims and panels, bevel to soften or widen an edge, and add loop cuts to redirect or support the shape.

You also use the main modifiers: mirror to model only half a symmetrical object, array to repeat elements like windows or fence posts, booleans to cut or combine large forms, and subdivision to smooth a low-poly base into cleaner curves. Curves handle clean paths for cables, rails, pipes, or stylized shapes that are painful to build from boxes alone.

In practice: block a vehicle from a few primitives, extrude and bevel to find its design lines, mirror to keep it symmetrical, use arrays for repeating details, then add a quick subdivision to soften things before lighting and painting over the render.

Why it matters

Without these operations, 3D is slower than drawing — you fight the software instead of using it as a perspective and lighting helper, stuck with clumsy shapes, hand-rebuilt repeated details, and geometry that breaks when you try to smooth or light it. With them, you iterate in 3D as fast as you thumbnail: change proportions, add or remove parts, push a silhouette, and get a clean render to paint over instead of being locked into your first blockout.
