Combining and interlocking forms
Building solid objects by locking simple 3D forms together so they feel connected, not stacked like stickers.
What it is
This skill treats complex objects as simple 3D forms that lock into each other in space: boxes, cylinders, wedges, and spheres that share edges, overlap, and bite into one another. You are not placing shapes side by side; you are deciding how one form sits against, over, or inside another.
This means finding the "joints" and seams between parts: how an arm plugs into a torso, how a handle grows out of a mug, how armor plates nest and overlap. Draw through the forms, including hidden edges, to check that curves wrap correctly, corners line up, and contact points make sense from every angle.
Interlocking makes transitions feel designed, not vague. Instead of a neck that just thins out below the head, build a cylinder that plugs into the skull above and the ribcage below. Instead of a horn just growing from a skull, draw a wedge that inserts into the skull, sharing a clear border where they meet.
Why it matters
Without combined and interlocking forms, your objects look like flat stickers or balloon parts floating near each other. Limbs feel tacked on, armor hovers off the body, and props break apart when you change the angle. Once forms lock together, drawings feel solid: you can turn them in space, add detail, and the design holds up because the pieces actually fit.
You can check it when
- ✓You can point to where two parts meet and show which form overlaps, inserts into, or wraps around the other.
- ✓You can redraw the same object from a new angle and keep the joints between parts consistent and believable.
- ✓Your limbs, handles, and attachments feel anchored into the main mass, not floating or drifting.
- ✓You can simplify a complex reference into boxes, cylinders, and wedges whose forms share edges and contact planes instead of just touching at vague tangents.
