Modeling modes (hard-surface, basic organic)
Blocking out clean hard-surface and organic forms in 3D so they light, render, and paint over well.
What it is
Modeling modes mean two broad ways to shape things in 3D: hard-surface (machines, props, architecture) and basic organic (simple bodies, cloth, rocks, plants). You are not doing film-ready sculpting — you are blocking in forms with solid perspective, lighting, and angles to paint over.
For hard-surface work, you build objects from clear planes and edges: boxes, cylinders, panels, brackets. You keep corners crisp where the design needs them, add bevels where light should catch, and avoid messy, lumpy surfaces. A sci‑fi crate, a gun blockout, or a vehicle shell that holds up from multiple views are all examples.
For basic organic work, you use smooth volumes to stand in for living or soft things: a torso as a ribcage plus pelvis, a rock as a few broad wedges, a cloth cape as a single flowing sheet with big folds. You rely on subdivision or smoothing and a few supporting edge loops to keep forms soft and continuous, not pinched or jagged.
In practice, you switch modes depending on the design part. A mech pilot might be a soft, subdivided body inside a crisp, paneled cockpit. A ruined temple can be mostly hard-surface blocks with some organic boulders and tree trunks. Your goal is not a finished model but a 3D sketch you can light, screenshot, and paint into.
Why it matters
If you only know one way to model, everything comes out either weirdly rubbery or unnaturally sharp. Hard objects end up with sagging, dented planes that break perspective and lighting; organic shapes end up faceted and jointed like cheap toys. That makes your paint-over fight the base instead of building on it. Once you can deliberately choose crisp-and-planar or smooth-and-volumetric and build both quickly, your block-ins read clearly, catch light believably, and support any angle you need.
You can check it when
- ✓You can build a vehicle, weapon, or building with clean planes, deliberate edges, and no random lumps when lit from different angles.
- ✓You can block in a figure, creature, or soft prop as a small set of smooth volumes that read correctly in perspective from multiple views.
- ✓You can mix both in one scene — a character in armor, or rocks against architecture — without everything collapsing into the same texture or sharpness.
- ✓Your models read as usable, grey, untextured forms; you do not need materials or a heavy paint-over to tell what is hard vs. soft and how it is built.
